Zheng He

The year 2005 is the 600th anniversary of Zheng He's maiden voyage in 1405 to the "Western Seas" (Southeast Asia and beyond). There are many events and activities. These activities will take place in Singapore as well as in Malaysia, China, and Taiwan and elsewhere.

Malaysia regards Cheng Ho-the preferred way to refer to Zheng He-as a historical figure of great importance. These are just a few of the activities being organized and there are several States that will have celebration events over the course of this year.

3 April 2005: The Chinese Association of Malacca held a seminar on Zheng He and Malaysia. Three speakers were invited from China, including Prof Kong Yuanzhi.

6-8 May 2005
: Puteri Hong Li Po (bilingual opera in Malay and Mandarin, with English sub-titles). Venue: Taman Budaya Negari Melaka. Directed by Rosminah Tahir. Ms Soong Ai Ling played the leading role Hang Li Po.

5 June 2005
: Malaysian Chinese Cultural Society and the Selangor Chinese Hall will hold an international conference on Zheng He.

21 August 2005
: The Cheng Ho Cultural Museum will be officially opened in Malacca. As mentioned, the Museum is located in the along the Melaka River opposite the old Portuguese church where Zheng He’s Guan Chang was believed to be sited.

21-22 August 2005
: In conjunction with the visit to Malacca above, our Society will hold a two-day international conference in Malacca. The theme for the conference is: Zheng He’s Legacy and the World Today. Details of the itinerary and the program will be given in our website www. Chengho.org.
