The Violent River
called with a sunset-horn;
The Terrance drifted travelers' feeling song.
The Old Pass facing home way 1000-Li long,
My hairs turn gray by autumn wind strong.

The brocade belt
with a sword round my waist,
Riding my horse to guard the autumn Jade-Pass.
Don't laugh at me as a general son in the west,
I'd like to dedicate Liangzhou with my poetic ideas.
(Tr. Z. Manfield)
凉 州 词
王 翰
葡萄美酒夜光杯,
欲饮琵琶马上催。
醉卧沙场君莫笑!
古来征战几人回?

With wine of grapes
the caps of jade would glow at night;
Drinking to pipa songs, we are summoned to fight.
Don't laugh if we lay drunken on the battleground!
How many warriors ever came back safe and sound?
