A Miscellaneous Poem
Anonymous Author

The Violent River called with a sunset-horn;
The Terrance drifted travelers' feeling song.
The Old Pass facing home way 1000-Li long,
My hairs turn gray by autumn wind strong.
(Tr. Z. Manfield)

The Frontier Song
Chang Jian
(I)

Offering tribute and reluctantly leaving the Capital for home,
WUSUN submitted to the emperor not to establish any kingdom.
At the end of the Heaven, the tribe was peaceful everywhere,
Warring spirit altered bright sunshine in harmony atmosphere.
(Tr. Z. Manfield)
*Note: Wusun was an ancient tribe with 630,000 people in the West Han Dynasty (B.C.206-A.D.25)

Thinking in the Frontier
Li Yi
(748-829)

The brocade belt with a sword round my waist,
Riding my horse to guard the autumn Jade-Pass.
Don't laugh at me as a general son in the west,
I'd like to dedicate Liangzhou with my poetic ideas.
(Tr. Z. Manfield)

STARTING FOR THE FRONT
Wang Han

With wine of grapes the caps of jade would glow at night;
Drinking to pipa songs, we are summoned to fight.
Don't laugh if we lay drunken on the battleground!
How many warriors ever came back safe and sound?
(X.Y.Z.)
