Walk
on the WILD side
|
Hi
everyone, the Watcher is back with a bag full of treats just
in time for this holiday season. I have down the head of Wild
Styles Productions, the pioneering hip-hop avenger everyone
has been talking about, but can't seem to hear from D-wild of
Wild Styles Productions. However, before we get down to the
nitty-gritty, I just think you might want to know that there
are two new dubs in Beijing. The larger of the two clubs is
Sgt. Pepper's. This place by reputation alone is geared towards
the 'thirtyish, fortyish' partygoer and is laid out accordingly,
It's large place, obviously aiming at the post-WTO influx of
foreign clientele. If you still believe rock-n-roll will never
die, this be the place for you.
The second newest contender is called the Velvet Room. This
place has hooked up the local techno favourite The China Pump
Factory. They've managed to take up most of the partygoers who
were left homeless by Club Vogue's sudden closing by local authorities,
and are picking up steam. Keep an eye out for this place.
Now for a special treat, my chat with the head of Wild Styles
Productions, D-wild. I know where this guy is every weekend,
but this interview was the hardest to get I've had in a while.
I swear the man won't sis still. Anyways, this is what he had
to say.
Watches: So first tell me something about yourself, D-wild.
D-wild: Well, the name is no longer D-wild. It's Hustle Jones,.
The hustle and bustle of life in China simply means not sitting
still, so I've chosen a more fitting name Who am I, personally?
I'm a little black kid from the Southside of Chicago who wakes
up every miming saying, "Holy Shut! I live in China!"
Watcher: So, how did you end up here?
Hustle Jones: I have hundreds of different reasons, but the
simplest is because of my schooling. I have a BA in Chinese
and a Minor in Computer Science. After graduation I just asked
myself a simple question, "What's the best place in the
world to go practice Chinese?" And, here I am.
Watcher: Okay, logical. What made you take interest in hip-hop
in China?
Hustle Jones: Boredom. I was tired of listening to techno in
every single club, every single weekend. I was raised under
the mentality, "don't whine about it, fix it". So
I recruited some DJ friends and Wild Styles Productions was
born.
Watcher: So, how's business?
Hustle Jones: The business is something that has just been non-stop.
We have taken up residency at Club Orange every weekend. Soon
we're going to take over an entirely Chinese Club catered more
towards the local market. Watcher: Do you really think the local
market is ready for hip-hop?
Hustle Jones: I know it is. I've run into some people who think
that because hip-hop is highly lyrical it can't survive in China.
I simply point out two facts to those that don't believe in
the market power of hip-hop, First, Japan. Hip-hop now generates
about $ 1.3 billion USD annually in Japan. I think that's nice
number for a country with a language barrier. The second thing
that I point out is the success of my events, thus far. Next
to Armenians, the local Chinese are some of the most loyal followers
of Wild Styles Productions.
Watcher: What's next?
Hustle Jones: Well, I've told you about invading a local Chinese
club, something else I have up my sleeve are some special guests
from the States this spring. I also run open mic MC contests
featuring local and foreign lyricists at my events to give Beijingers
a true feel for hip-hop culture in its highest form. So just
keep an eye open and I'll deliver all you hip-hop needs.
Well, folks, that's it for this issue, Until next time, ladies
shake your hips, guys keep chasing.
